About Us

The BigShot idea was created by two mates from New Zealand, Mattie and Tom, after a simple idea turned into something everyone wanted to keep playing.

Mattie and Tom met while attending St Patrick’s College Town, where they became close friends through basketball after first crossing paths at high jump training.

The idea for BigShot first came about while we were hanging out with friends, throwing bottle caps at a container and competing to see who could land the shot. Coming from strong basketball backgrounds, the two quickly began to think, “What if this were an actual hoop?”

From there, the idea for BigShot was born.

What started as a fun challenge between mates turned into 5 years of testing, redesigning, and refining. With the help of their friend Thor Pimenta on the design side, we have created a portable mini basketball hoop that clips onto glass bottles, instantly turning any hangout into a game.

Both Mattie and Tom have strong basketball backgrounds, having both played in the New Zealand NBL for the Wellington Saints. Tom has also proudly represented the New Zealand Tall Blacks on the international stage and built an impressive professional career, including winning championships with the Sydney Kings in the Australian NBL, multiple championships in New Zealand, and currently with the Auckland Tuataras.

That competitive basketball mindset helped shape BigShot into more than just a novelty product. It was designed to be simple, portable, competitive, and to instantly bring people together.

Whether it’s a backyard BBQ, beach day, flat gathering, camping trip, party, or just hanging out with mates, BigShot is all about creating laughs, competition, and those moments where everyone suddenly thinks they’re Steph Curry.

What started as a random idea among friends has now become a New Zealand-designed product heading into stores, parties and eventually homes around the world.
